OBJECTIVES In order to understand how marketers and advertisers design, research, and implement their campaigns, learning more about the ways in which specific advertisements work is a good place to start. That is, while we now know that advertising is a fine art for separating people from their money, it is not as clear, as Steve Jobs’ famous quote suggests, that we understand the deeper mechanisms that advertising uses to convince us to give our money to one company versus another.
GUIDELINES In order start thinking about the mechanics of advertising, these two assignments allow you to research and analyze any print advertisement and advertising brand of your choice.
For your 3–4 page Brand Analysis, you will select a popular brand (American or international) and explore the history and significance of this brand from both a marketing and advertising perspective. After providing a brief history of your brand, your analysis should discuss how this brand has “worked” since its introduction. For example, what changes has the company made to the brand? How and why has the brand be able to remain successful in today’s marketplace? Finally, your analysis should conclude with your own ideas regarding how you think this brand could be improved upon.
