To guide students through the process of interpreting course readings at
multiple levels, I utilize a “Mind, Heart/Spirit, & Hands
Interpretive Discussion Framework.” There are three complimentary
components to this framework:
a) The “Mind” component addresses theory and content to the analysis of
course readings. Students respond to prompts such as: What is the main
argument that the author is making? What are some main ideas in this
reading? What is the purpose of this research study? Where/when did the
research take place? What data collection methods were used? What are
the main findings of this research study? What is the gist of this
b) The “Heart” component involves emotions and invites students to
explore what is resonating with them as readers. I ask students to think
“What resonated with you? (i.e. your heart, your emotions/feelings,
your spirit). Students respond to prompts such as: Choose and record two
quotes from the research article that captured your attention. Provide a
rationale for why you selected these quotes. Is there anything that
struck you about this reading? Explain. Did you have any feelings of
surprise, anger, confusion, or did any other emotions come up for you
before, during, or after the reading? Explain.
c) The “Hands” component incorporates applied practice to the analysis
of course readings. Students respond to prompts such as: How does this
research article or course reading relate to specific concepts/topics
related to our course? What practical strategies did you gain from this
research article or course reading? What personal and/or professional
connections did you make with this research article/course reading? How
does (or might) this research article or course reading inform your
development as an instructional technology professional? What questions
did this research article or course reading raise for you?
